Nursing, like medicine, is a noble profession. It demands a great deal of patience and dedication to be able to put aside your needs and tend to those of your patients, day in and day out, on shifts that are grueling and demanding. There are some forms of nursing that take more out of you than others, like forensic nursing, the saving grace being that you bring more value to the lives of people who have been broken and violated through crime and assault.

If you’re looking into the option of becoming a forensic nurse, you need to hold more than just an MSN (Master of Science in Nursing) degree from an accredited school of nursing. There are qualities that are essential to being a good forensic nurse, and these are:

  • Sensitivity: You must be able to empathize with the victim and sense their pain and torment. If you tend to go about your work with clinical efficiency rather than treating each patient according to their experiences, you will not make a good forensic nurse.
  • Patience: Any sexual and forensic examination takes time, and you must have the patience to soothe and assuage your patient’s fright and nervousness. It is a difficult job, one that you must handle with the maximum tolerance if you are to achieve your objectives.
  • Understanding: When you have worked as a forensic nurse for a few years, the job tends to get to you. Seeing more and more rape cases on a daily basis makes you cynical and worldly-wise. You are still a good nurse, but you may no longer be able to understand a patient and do what’s best for them. This is why you need to keep working at retaining your sensitive side, the part of you that allows you to connect to total strangers and deal with their pain.
  • Observant: Most patients will be too traumatized to repeat their experiences, so it’s up to you to try and find out what could have happened from the marks and wounds on their bodies. You need to make a thorough examination in order to collect enough evidence so that the perpetrator of this horrible crime can be found and punished.

Besides this, if you are training to become a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, you need to earn either the SANE-A or SANE-P certificate or both. SANE professionals work with victims of sexual assault and take care of their examination and general well-being. SANE-A allows you to work with both adolescents and adults while the SANE-P certification allows you to work with children who have been sexually abused or raped. Both professional international certifications can be earned only if you have at least two years of experience as a registered nurse (RN) and must be renewed every three years.

It’s not something that can be taken lightly, not when it comes to the safety and well-being of your children. Food allergies may not sound serious, but when your child is suffocating, finding it difficult to breathe, breaks out in hives or rashes, vomiting, running to the bathroom with diarrhea, suffering intense stomach pains and other symptoms, it’s going to be hard to stay calm and get them ASAP to a doctor. Children are susceptible to food allergies, some of them from birth itself. And it’s up to us as parents to ensure that they don’t suffer as a result. So if you’re hoping to protect your kids from food allergies, here’s what you need to do:

  • Breastfeed for as long as possible: The health benefits of breast milk have been proven beyond doubt, but if you need added incentive to delay the introduction of solid foods, the prevention of food allergies is one. If your family is at risk for food allergies, it’s best to breastfeed your child for as long as possible.
  • Start solid foods one at a time: When you do start him/her on solid food, introduce one food at a time so that it’s easier to determine the cause of allergies if your child starts exhibiting symptoms. When you begin more than one food item simultaneously, it’s hard to isolate the food that’s responsible for causing adverse reactions in your child.
  • Delay giving them eggs, milk and nuts: Some of the most common food allergens are milk and other dairy products, eggs, peanuts and other nuts and nut-based products. If you suspect that your child may be allergic to any of these foods, delay them until they’re two years of age and above.
  • Read food labels carefully: Your child may be allergic to all dairy products so you need to steer clear of anything with lactic acid. And that’s why you need to read labels carefully to avoid giving them food that does not suit their bodies. You may think you’re buying a chocolate bar, but if there’s a hint of peanut in it, you’re buying trouble for the entire family.
  • Talk to your child about the need to avoid certain foods: Rather than just telling your kids that they must not eat certain foods, it’s best to explain to them how they need to stay away from them because of their allergies. This will help them avoid potentially disastrous situations when they’re at school or with friends. Teach them to read labels and make a conscious effort to avoid foods that do not agree with them.

It’s not just technology that makes a difference; it’s the way we use it that matters the most. EMRs have made rapid strides in the field of medicine, but we’re not yet gaining all the benefits we can from this electronic form of maintaining patient records. For one, most healthcare practitioners are hesitant to embrace this technology as part of their practices, the reason being that they’re not too comfortable with it. And even if they are, there’s always the question of how much importance the patient places on this tool.

For patients to perceive the value of EMRs, they need to see physicians being at home with them. And to achieve this end, doctors and other healthcare practitioners must spend time getting up to speed with the system; they must know how to use at least the basic and most common features. Maybe it’s a throwback to the days of yore, but the fact remains that patients tend to improve their opinion of doctors’ practices and their skills by looking at the technology they use.

Newer tools are on the horizon, tools that will allow direct communication between diagnostic tools and EMRs. So instead of having to key in the results from a scan or an EKG, the system does it for you. For example, HeartCentrix, a software program from the Cardiac Science Corporation, allows EMRs to hook up directly to their diagnostic stress and electrocardiography devices. In fact, the physician can launch the program from within the EMR and request a test, after which they can edit and review the results. This allows physicians the luxury of connecting to their systems and ordering tests and reviewing results from any location.

Another tool that could significantly improve medical practices is e-prescription, like the one launched by SureScripts. If you sign up for the program, your EMR connects directly to retail pharmacies that are part of this program and allows you to send and receive prescriptions and refill requests electronically.

There’s no doubt that innovative technology like electronic medical record systems and Health 2.0 services are improving healthcare and the way it is being provided. It stands to reason therefore that we can expect newer additions to this range of tools that allow us to harness EMRs and utilize their potential to the fullest.
